Today, I will show you how to make a fun pocket for your junk journal using doodle squares and torn papers. This technique is simple and easy to do and is suitable for beginners and advanced alike. You can either watch the video tutorial below, by clicking on it or you can scroll down the page to find the instructions on how to make this project.
This is a very versatile project, you could use these squares for a variety of purposes, not only pockets. You could even make a memory board by using passport-sized photos or images of things that hold a special meaning to you and place them inside each of the squares.
Materials
1 sheet of Art paper to paint the Doodle Squares
2 old Book Pages
Coffee Dye or Tea Dye (optional)
1 x 61/2" (17cm) square Background Panel for the pocket
Tacky Glue
Distress Ink
Ink Pens
Journal Page
Instructions
Doodle Panels
Draw or paint 9 x 2" (5cm) or larger background squares on a sheet of art paper, using either paints or watercolour pencils.
Set aside, until the paint has dried, then cut the panels out.
Use ink pens to create small doodles on each of the nine background squares. I used black, white and gold pens but you can choose any colours you desire. For doodle pattern ideas, search "doodle patterns" on Google, you will find tons of ideas or you may want to use your own unique patterns.
Book Page Panels
The book pages can either be left plain or you could spray them with tea or coffee dye, as I did in this project. Leave the pages to dry before moving on to the next step
.
Tear out 9 x 3" (7.5cm) square panels from the book pages. If you are using different sizes, then make sure the book page panels are 1" (2.5cm) larger than the doodle panels.
Ink the edges of the book page panels.
Glue each of the doodle panels onto the centre of each book page panel, as shown below.
Ruffle up the edges of each book page panel, making tiny cuts here and there, then press the edges flat to create a ruffled edge, as shown in the photo, below.
Make a pocket panel from the decorative paper or cardstock, add 3/8" hinges to each side of the pocket.
Glue each panel to the pocket, starting with the top panels first, glue the outside panels on first, then you can position the middle panel so it is centred, to create a uniform look, as shown in the photo below.
Have fun with this project!
Happy Crafting!
